Salmonella is most commonly associated with feces and fecal matter. Plants can get salmonella in a variety of ways, but the most common materials infected with are animal products. Plants most commonly get salmonella by being in touch with feces, either when plant material is harvested from the ground, or it’s placed into the same carriers used for meat products, or it’s processed in a facility that also processes animals or has animals around.

This is a graphic of Salmonella and related bacteria. It’s the second-most cause of food poisoning, and causes stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Just 15-20 of these can cause an illness. Salmonella is often found in feces, including the manure that is still used in many places to fertilize plants. Cooking kills Salmonella, but unfortunately, products such as Kava cannot be cooked.
